Orlando Hudson, Revisited

by ~ January 8th, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Last month manager Don Wakamatsu suggested that the team could look to improve their infield defense by moving Jose Lopez to first base and acquiring a “plus-plus defensive second baseman.”  At the time it looked like then-free agent Jerry Hairston, a favorite of Wak, could be the player benefitting from this.  I also took a look at Orlando Hudson.  All of this was back before Christmas.

A few days ago, however, the always reliable Jason A. Churchill relayed a quote from one of his sources, suggesting that the Mariners “are high on Hudson if the market clears the way some more.”

Despite GM Jack Zduriencik’s frugality this offseason, Seattle may be out of money to spend.  Still, the market for Hudson has completely collapsed now that his most promising suitor, the Washington Nationals, seems to be backing down, so Hudson becomes an intriguing option for the Mariners.

Let’s take a look at the market for Hudson:

Orioles – Currently have Brian Roberts.
Red Sox – Have the 2008 MVP playing second base.
White Sox – Could use Hudson, but don’t appear interested.
Indians – Were interested but are now content with internal options and are out of cash.
Tigers – Have Placido Polanco.
Royals – Have interest, but would have to find a way to unload Jose Guillen’s contract.
Angels – Have Howie Kendrick.
Twins – Have Alexi Casilla.
Yankees – Have Robinson Cano.  Were once interested but no longer.
A’s – Have Mark Ellis.
Rays – Have Aki Iwamura.
Rangers – Have Ian Kinsler.
Blue Jays – Aren’t spending money this offseason, but have a fit.
Diamondbacks – Could use him back but are in financial trouble.
Braves – Have Kelly Johnson.
Cubs – Have several second base options.
Reds – Have Brandon Phillips.
Rockies – Were loosely connected early in the offseason.
Marlins – Have Dan Uggla and are cheap.
Astros – Have Kaz Matsui and money problems.
Dodgers – Have Blake Dewitt and are saving all money for Manny Ramirez.
Brewers – Could use him, but don’t appear interested.
Mets – Would love Hudson, but they’d have to dump Luis Castillo’s salary first.
Phillies – Have Chase Utley.
Pirates – Too cheap?
Padres – Too cheap.
Giants – Were interested before Thanksgiving.  Quiet since.
Cardinals – Have Adam Kennedy and limited money.
Nationals – Could jump in later, but seem content going young for one more year

That doesn’t look very promising.  The Mets and Royals would be leading the charge if they didn’t have to move impossible contract first.  If I had to guess where Hudson will end up I might choose the Giants, but right now his market appears completely dead.

Money is tight, I get it, but am I crazy for thinking that Hudson could be had for only $5-8M annually? That’s a pretty sweet deal, but I don’t really see what other options he’s got.

Whether you buy into the metrics or not, Hudson is often regarded as one of the premier defensive second basemen in baseball, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he was the guy Wakamatsu was referring to last month.

I’m not expecting Seattle to make a play for Hudson, but it really wouldn’t surprise me one bit.  Keep your eyes peeled.

For what it’s worth…over at MarinerCentral I did similar market math with Adam Dunn and had to wonder just who was going to step in and pay the guy anything close to what he wanted.

Yankees; OUT (too many DHs already)
    Red Sox: OUT (Ortiz)
Blue Jays: OUT (not spending this year)
Orioles: OUT (declared that he was too expensive – talking to Sexson now)
    Rays: OUT (Burrell)
White Sox: OUT (Thome and a full outfield)
Tigers: OUT (trying to cut payroll)
    Indians: maybe in…but…longshot
    Royals: OUT (too cheap)
    Twins: OUT
Angels: OUT (blew their wad on Fuentes)
    As: OUT (Giambi)
Raners: OUT (going with all their young hitting talent)
    Mariners: proclaimed OUT…but…
    Nats: OUT (as of yesterday)
    Braves: OUT
    Phillies: OUT (Ibanez/Howard)
    Mets: Right now NOT IN…but…
    Marlins: OUT (too cheap)
    Cubs: OUT (Bradley)
    Cardinals: OUT (too cheap)
    Astros: OUT (money problems)
Brewers: OUT (too many lumbering no-field guys)
    Pirates: OUT (too cheap)
    Reds: OUT (duh)
    Rockies: NEVER IN
Giants: OUT (they’re looking for infielders)
Dodgers: IN but only if they whiff on Manny
    PadresL OUT

So…Dunn’s only potential landing spots are Seattle, NY Mets, and Indians? And th Mets are VERY unlikely since they’re about to spend a chunk on Lowe.

Kinda wondering how he even gets 10 mi/year right now. I think he’d be better off accepting a 1 or 2 year deal and hoping the market recovers.

I would love to have Hudson and Dunn at 2B and DH respectively…but 1) what would they do with Lopez and 2) aren’t they out of money to spend?

If they could get rid of one of the terrible pitching contracts (Batista, Wash, or Silva) in a package with Lopez, then there would be both room on the roster and salary freedom.

But who would do that? If the team was really in a need for Lopez, wouldn’t they just sign Hudson? What team needs a 2B AND a bad starting pitcher?

  • bakomariner

Could they just bring in Hudson to play SS? He’s a plus guy at second, but how would he figure at short? I want more than any other move for Z to get rid of Yuni, so I’d totally be on board with Hudson playing short…can’t be any worse than Yuni…

It really is crazy how saturated the market is. I can’t wait to see how this all shakes out.

@ SABR Matt – Welcome to the site. I was wondering the same thing about Dunn as well… could be interesting. I think the whole “we’re out of money” thing is being overblown… there’s always some flexibility in the payroll. Zduriencik is shopping for bargains, and he’s got this thing right where he wants it.

@ bako – No one is talking about replacing Lopez. The Mariners need his cheap offense. He would shift over the 1B, bumping Branyan to DH. Lopez could be the 3B if/when Beltre leaves.

And no, Hudson can’t play shortstop. He hasn’t logged an inning there since being drafted in 1997.

  • bakomariner

I think moving Lopez to 1B would be a bad idea…I think he’d be a solid contributor there talent-wise, but I’m afraid of his attitude…there have been articles about how he has matured into a leader, but I’m afraid he’d take it as a demotion and take a step back in his maturity…

He didn’t seem too thrilled about playing 1B when interviewed and questioned about it…

  • http://bleedingblueandteal.com Jon Shields

It’s a valid concern, but at some point he has to do it anyway. He won’t be a 2B forever.

The Mariners can’t be afraid to relocate a player because they don’t want to hurt his feelings. If they are as committed to improving the defense as they sound, they’re going to do it and Lopez will have to deal with it. He’ll get over it.

  • ernier

Maybe the M’s should consider trying to trade both Washburn and Batista and also throw in 5M in each deal, which would still then save them around 9M this year and then sign one of those free agents to a 1 or 2 year contract. If they could get Dunn for 3 years at 30M I would do that also.

I’m even more annoyed now than I was last year about not trading Washburn and dumping his salary. I hope Howard/Chuck finally realize that they should stay out of all personnel moves and let Jack Z figure out how to get out of this mess.

  • bakomariner

If that happens, do you move Branyan to DH to platoon with Morse/Shelton/WLAD and put Clement on the bench?

Would they do a straight L/R platoon with Clement and Kenji behind the plate?

  • ernier

You could platoon Branyan/Wlad in LF and have Chavez as the late game defensive replacement and then have Clement DH/Catch. It hurts a bit defensively in LF, but Clement needs his AB’s

  • http://bleedingblueandteal.com Scott Weber

I really don’t like the idea of Branyan playing OF. It just kills whatever offense value he brings.

  • bakomariner

I agree with Weber…Branyan should never play outfield…

I would rather have an all-defensive OF and let the power come from 1B, 3B, DH and C.

    Let Chavez play LF full-time…

  • SABR Matt

Yeah…I don’t buy this whole “we need to cut payroll 20%, we’re bleeding money!!” talk. Z is talking out both sides of his mouth, saying he’s in the market for big lefty power bats an d defensive second basemen and all that jazz and then saying he can’t spend any money.

I doubt we have enough money to sign both Hudson AND Dunn…but I’m sure we’re considering either/or.

And if we sign Hudson, I’d expect Lopez to third and Beltre traded for a halfway decent MLB ready outfield prospect and that makes room to sign Dunn to DH and Branyan at first.

    RF) Ichiro
    2B) Hudson
    DH) Dunn
3B) Lopez (I think his power surge is the start of the Tejada career I expected)
    1B) Branyan/Shelton
    CF) Gutierrez
    C) Clement/Johjima
    LF) Balentien/Chavez
    SS) Betancourt

That team is a giant step better defensively, about as good as last year’s team offensively with room to be better if the youngsters step it up a notch and poised to take advantage of a relatively strong starting rotation.

  • geo

I like the idea of Hudson at 2B but isn’t the hole at SS even bigger than the one at 2B. Slightly off topic but Yuni was one of the worst SS in baseball last year. Since Z has revealed little before making his moves so far, I’m holding out hope that fixing SS is a priority.

  • ernier

It makes me wonder if the M’s are playing coy a little bit to try and get the price to come down on some free agents knowing that guys like Dunn and Hudson’s choices are becoming limited.

  • SABR Matt

Betancourt was indeed worse defensively than Lopez…and you could replace Hudson with Cabrera, shift Betancourt to second and Lopez to third…but part of Betancourt’s problem is being addressed…he went to Ibanez’ fat farm this winter for the first time…the Ms got tired of his Cuban Ballplayer Disease and have told him in no uncertain terms that he needs to work a lot harder and stay in shape.

  • http://bleedingblueandteal.com Jon Shields

It will definitely help if he indeed comes to camp in shape. I’ll believe it when I see it, though.. I’m not expecting him to come in looking like he did his rookie season.

  • SABR Matt

Yeah…I’m not expecting miracles…but if he get his defense up to average, it will be a big boost to the infield portion of the team DER.

The Outfield is already much improved…sign Hudson, get Betancourt to minimum competency, move Lopez to third where he’s better suited, get a decent defensive season out of Branyan and Shelton at first…that’s a heck of a fielding unit.
