Discuss: Johnny Damon

Dave hits the nail on the head.  I can’t really add anything to that.

What does everyone think of the Mariners adding Johnny Damon at this point in the offseason?

  • htownm

at that price he should absolutely be picked up…. and everyone seems to forget that if a RH bat is still desired, it’s not like its a big loss to dump Langerhans… I mean really.

  • dmojr

i am just waiting for it to get done… at 4-6 million i would be pretty disappointed if the M’s didn’t make a play for him. Im not even a Damon fan really.. Boston i thought he was a weirdo.. and his girl arm is a major “turn off” but he’s a solid player and the mariners could use that.

Obviously none of us know how much $$ the m’s have, but it could be argued adding damon for the price mentioned above could leave some money in a reserve fund for mid season trades (a RH bat)

My thoughts exactly. His girl arm would bother me (a lot) as would his post game interviews, but at the end of the day he’s better than what we’ve got and could be a real bargain.

There is a hidden cost with Damon…the wear and tear on JaWilson having to run out and pick up the ball on those “long” throws to second base.

Personally I’d rather see Langerhans/Saunders or Bradley in LF and Damon at DH.

“The wear and tear on JaWilson having to run out and pick up the ball on those ‘long’ throws”

HAHA are you serious? so the wear and tear of having to move? it’s comments like these that make people think baseball isn’t a sport and that it doesn’t take athleticism.

I think Jack Wilson will be just fine if he has to move 5 extra feet to field a Johnny Damon throw rather than a Langerhans throw. I don’t think that’s much of a hidden cost at all

          • BoiseM

            “HAHA are you serious?”

            No.

Just another jab at Damon throwing like a sissy girl.

Maybe we could get ManRam to play cutoff for Damon.

Just say NO to Johnny Damon.

    • http://proballnw.com Jon

Would you like to give a reason why?

  • ernier

I would be OK with Damon for no more than 5 Million, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. I don’t think the M’s are focused right now on this other bat everyone keeps talking about. I think they’re focused on the #3 Starter and that’s thier #1 priority. They’d probaly be OK going into Spring Training with Tui and Everidge competing for the final roster spot. If neither one of them steps up and takes it, then they might look to make a move before the season starts. They might even be able to find that guy via a waiver claim.

Now that I’ve said this I’m sure the M’s will announce the Damon signing this afternoon.

    • http://proballnw.com Jon

I agree that the Mariners probably see the #3 starter as more important than the bat, but no reason not to do both, especially if the pitcher is acquired in trade. We’ll see what happens.

  • ernier

A little off topic, but has anyone heard anything about the arbitration for Casey Kotchman? It seems like it’s taking a long time to finalize the last arb eligible contract, hopefully this doesn’t end up in a hearing. Do you think they might be working on some type of 2 year deal?

  • azykial

I’m not sure they have enough $$ to do both a bat and SP while still maintaining a little bit of extra room for additions mid season if we are in a race and have some injuries/holes to fill. It seems to me that even if we made a trade for a #3 we would still be paying more money to whoever we traded for (not a guarantee but likely) which would make signing Damon a bit of a mistake in my opinion. We have enough coverage in LF with possible upside to start the season with. Also with some the few durability concerns (a0t catcher and SS for starters) I would rather see us get our hands on a #3 and have a contingency fund.

  • MarinerMan6

I think Damon is a great idea as it avoid us ever having to make Griffey be more than a pinch hitter for Jack Wilson. Plus just have Langerhans sub for Damon or Bradley late in the game in LF for defensive purposes. Secondly, with our catchers, Gutierrez, Bradley (switch hitter much better from the right side), and Lopez it is not like the M’s are dying for a RH bat despite what has been implied recently.

    • sodomojo95

Also you fail to mention Jack Wilson and Chone Figgins. So on any given day against a lefty, we can run out 6 players from the right side: Bradley, Lopez, Figgins, Gutierrez, Wilson, + Moore/Johnson

    • mrakbaseball

If Seattle signs Damon, wouldn’t he most likely take Langerhans’ spot on the roster? Griffey would then be used as a pinch hitter for Jack Wilson and whoever’s catching that day.

  • epeyt88

no to damon. i’d much rather see bradley out there and i’m not a big bradley fan. i don’t think damon fits the defensive scheme that jack z is trying to build. he throws like a 3rd grader and his range is only getting worse.

focus on bringing back bedard! i know a lotta people don’t like the idea, but when he’s on…he’s really on and sometimes you gotta take a chance.

i’m really not good with what free agents should go for on the market. does anyone have any guess about what bedard will eventually sign for?

  • CrustyJuggler

I’ll say here what I said at Prospect Insider [regarding Damon].

I’ll only accept Damon here if he grows out the hair and beard.

  • M-ners27

I really like the idea of Damon coming to Seattle. The guy is going to sign pretty cheap for his talent. I’d give him a 1 year $5 million contract (just like everyone else) maybe with some incentives. If the Mariners sign Damon I’d like to see Bradley moved to DH and Griffey on the bench with Langerhans as the fourth outfielder (Griffey can play on Bradleys off days)

It would provide an every day left fielder with some good offensive numbers who could drive in those needed runs we didn’t have last year to win games. A down side though, his arm is awful which makes me think alot more players will be running from second to home in closer situations…maybe we could have Bradley play left on the other hand, or have a battle in spring training.

After that I would still like the team to add one more starting pitcher to the mix, I’m not real high on Washburn and I’m too nervous to have 3rd times the charm on Erik Bedard. I thought about Pedro Martinez, he didn’t have a bad spell with the Phillies but his injury list has added up in the last few years. There always a trade that could be made. I don’t know if it’s good or bad but the M’s have sure been quiet the last few weeks.

  • Coug1990

I go back and forth about Damon. In some ways I think he is a little redundant on the roster, that is why we all were pining for a right-handed hitting outfielder. He is almost too much of a good thing. I love pizza and if I ate it all the time, I would be fat and happy. That is until I get sick of pizza and am left just being fat.

On the other hand, I love pizza and maybe I could eat it for an entire year before I got tired of eating it.

If Damon signs here, I will be happy because I think Jack will have looked at all options and choose the right one. If he doesn’t, then I would think that Jack is still looking at other options that he believes are a better fit with the roster.

Anyway, I am hungry for some reason.

  • ernier

Jack Z was just on 710 and the jist of what he said was that he’s looking for a Right Handed bat with versatility in the field to play 1B, DH and the Outfield. He said that’s something he is working on.
