The Griffey Return

by ~ February 11th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

4:00 PM, THUR: Jason A. Churchill says the two sides have already agreed to terms and are just working out the details.  He says the deal is less than $5M guaranteed (it better be a lot less) with incentives based on plate appearances.  He expects an announcement tomorrow.

8:05 AM, THUR: ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick is reporting that the Mariners have made “significant progress” in talks with Junior Griffey.

It’s just a matter of time…

11:20 PM, WED: Jason A. Churchill in the comments thread at Prospect Insider:

I’m not going to make this a big deal, but I was told this afternoon that Griffey has already agreed to terms – with someone, presumably Seattle, but that the M’s were weighing their options with Abreu, Anderson, et al.

It might not be Seattle, but who else is Griffey going to sign with?  There were apparently four teams interested in his services, but I find that a little hard to believe.

Look for something to be announced tomorrow.

Well, that would certainly explain some of the comments I saw on Hickey’s blog about an hour ago…guess everyone will have something to talk about tomorrow, yeah? :)

  • Project Monkey

Good stuff. I hope that it’s true, because I do not want Anderson.

Well I am hoping it is us. Abreu signed a one year deal with the Angels and Dunn signed a two year deal with the Nats. Just pray we don’t have to sign Anderson.

i agree, if we are gonna be left with either anderson or griffey, it may as well be griffey. I just hope we can get maybe a .270, 20hr, 70rbi season out of him, while only playing DH and sitting against tough lefties.

I think griffey is a great character guy for the cub house. after losing ibanez and focusing on the youth movement, you can understand the importantance of having vet. leadership and a guy whos viewed as doing it the right way. besides he’s going to get people to the ballpark, not that we have had any trouble with that, but when your going young sometime people dont have alot of interest in watching. but when you know this may be griffeys last year and with all the history. people are going to come and watch.

  • Luisam911

He can turn this team around, i think. He will bring that loose feeling in the club house and build the chemistry. I think he should DH though and have a faster LF. I hope the signing is true :)

It would be great to have the guy who ushered in most Mariner fans my age back in a Mariners’ uniform to end his career…

  • Brandon

This guy is my baseball hero…I’m so excited he’s coming back to Seattle. He’s the one guy I’m happy to have regardless of the fact he’s old and will be taking a roster spot from one of the young guys.

  • Mr.Benton

5 million! I surely hope it is only around maybe 2 million base. With possible incentives.

  • SABR Matt

I deoubt it will be worth more than the Everett deal was. 2-3 mil tops with possible incentives. I’m torn about this. Griffey is an icon and it will bring a tear to my eye to see him get his well-earned standing-o on opening day…but…if he doesn’t perform it will just be painful in the end. :(

To quote Slim Pickens as Mr. Taggert in “Blazing Saddle”…..

    I am depressed….

    Make that “Blazing Saddles”

  • Brandon

I read some quotes by griffey made last night and he says he hasn’t heard anything about a seattle return…just that his agent is taking care of everything. I still think he’s coming home though..

  • The Kid

Can we trade for Alex Rios? He is 28, a stud that no one knows much about because he plays in Canada in a division that does not give his team much hope for anything for the remainder of his career. He would fit in perfect in the outfield, and I’m sure the Jays would like to build up their minor league system with some prospects. He is signed through 2014, and I would LOVE to have him, Franklin Gutierrez and Ichiro. With Griffey as a DH, any possibility of this happening?

And who do you plan on giving up for Rios? Some big name prospects would definitely be in the deal.

It would be funny to have Gutz and Rios in the same outfield, because for some reason they remind me of each other a lot and I used to get them mixed up. Hmm..

  • Slugoben

I am so happy with Griffey, Fields and Silva trimming down!

  • Mr.Benton

I agree Rios and Gutz remind me of each other

  • Mr.Benton

And that proves it LOL they look so similar!!

Good luck getting Rios away from the Jays. I recall the Blue Jays talking about a trade last year that would send Rios to San Fransisco for Tim Lincecum. This was rejected by someone(I don’t remember which team), but if it was from the Blue Jays side I don’t think that we could get him with out giving up at least Morrow and another top prospect.

    NO Thanks!
