Not really. If they want to use him as an extra guy to catch all the pitchers it won't necessarily show how they'll want to use him during the season.

Well Catchers and Pitchers report first, so it will reveal a lot about what the M's plan to do with Garko's Catching experience, whether he reports with them.

Nevermind, I know Garko will play 1B vs. LHP but even so I see Jr. only getting maybe 1/2 of the ABs at DH vs. RHP. I'd rather have a lineup with Langerhans in LF and Bradley at DH vs. RHP than Bradley in LF and Jr. at DH.

Lets keep in mind that Jeff Clement also won the Johnny Bench award in college and we all know how great a defensive catcher he was. Garko was moved off being a catcher because he was terrible back there--the chances of needing a 3rd catcher could maybe come into play once or twice a year and I guess it is good he can catch in an emergency but it doesn't mean much.

Another thing that I see with this move is assuming Bradley is healthy (a big IF) Griffey is relegated to a pinch hitting role. Bradley should play everyday whether at DH or LF and then against LHP Garko can DH.

I love the sign, and I do not think we should look past the fact that he is a catcher. Yes, it has been a while and he changed positions from the minor leagues, but has anyone seen his stats as a catcher? He won the Johnny Bench Award for best collegiate catcher, and like he said, played all the way up to triple A. I think if he gets a look behind the plate, and if he can provide any kind of backstop defensively, he could add offense from that spot in the order that no one else offers. Great sign for platoon situations as well, and Byrnes is fine.

My lineup/batting order against LHP is as follows:

RF Ichiro!
3b Figgins
CF Gutierrez
Lf/DH Bradley
2b Lopez
1B Kotchman/Garko
DH/Lf Garko/Byrnes
C Take your pick
SS J. Wilson

Agsinst RHP

RF Ichiro!
3b Figgins
CF Gutierrez
DH Bradley/Griffey
2b Lopez
1b Kotchman
LF Langerhans
C Take your pick
SS J. Wilson

As of right now the pitching staff looks like this:

RP Felix!
LP Lee
LP RRS
RP Snell
LP Vargas

Bullpen
RP Fister (long man)
RP Aardsma (closer)
LP Olsen (loogie)
RP Lowe (set-up guy)
RP League (set-up guy)
RP Kelly or White(middle relief guy)
* note Kelly and White may unseat Olsen and they would then go with no lefty in the bullpen.

I think that's 11 pitchers.

Another option would be Fister as #5 starter and then Vargas would be in the pen.

1.Byrnes is not gone. You're reasoning is flawed. When they signed Byrnes on Friday I think they had a pretty good idea that they were about to sign Garko as well. Why waste the money, even though it is the minimum salary, they could use it somewhere else. If they signed Byrnes just to trade him, any team could've signed Byrnes for the league minimum and wouldn't have needed him in a trade. Also why not an 11 pitchers. It makes perfect sense.

2. I agree, however Kotchman will get some AB's agsints lefties so the M's know just what they have. If he can hit them consistently they'll keep him in there for hnis defense.

Two things happen with this signing....

#1. Byrnes is gone, I think. To keep him the Mariners have to keep 11 pitchers. It just doesn't happen anymore..or not for very long.

#2 Garko is going to eat into a bunch of Kotchman's PA's Garko's career split vs RHers is nearly identical to Kotchmans's. Garko's at .266-.335-.420. Kotchman is at .266-.337.414. That is over 1229 PAs for Garko and 1454 for Kotchman. (last year Garko was a bit below his career vRHP avgs and Kotchman a bit above). Vs. lefties Garko hits 36 pints higher, his OPB is nearly 60 points better and he slugs almost 120 pts better.

Last year Garko was a 6.2 UZR150 guy, a bit lesss than Kotchman's 11.4 (over a career Garko is -4.6, and Kotchman is 4.4)

In the end, especially on the road. It won't surprise me to see Garko get some lineup time against RHers. The real advantage for Kotchman is at home vs. righties....What is that, 60 games a year?

I like this addition a lot. A lot more than the Kotchman signing.

I'm with some other writers elsewhere....I still think the M's need that IF/OF utility guy. I can't find reference that Garko has played 3B at any level...he does have 12 MLB OF games...all last year.

The guy hamstringing the M's is Junior. But I still hate the Bradley deal more than anything. Trade him...dump his waiting for an explosion to happn future...pay halfhis salay...get something in return.
