JAC has Prospect News

Jason A. Churchill has a very informative post over at Prospect Insider. Follow the league for all the details, but here’s the recap:
RHRP Austin Bibens-Dirkx has been released. ABD was a cult favorite and a genuinely nice guy from the Pacific Northwest. We was on the fast track to the big leagues before the organization tried to change his mechanics, leading to injury. Before the change he had a very cool sidearm delivery. There is no real reason he was released except to make room for fresh meat.
RHP Joe Woerman was also released. No one should be too broken up over losing him.
RHP Phillippe Aumont is expected to begin the season at AA West Tennessee, and quite possibly in the bullpen. AA is an aggressive promotion for Aumont, but the High Desert environment isn’t good for any pitching prospect and Aumont should be able to handle AA hitters without much problem. If he ends up in the bullpen it will be a way to control his workload. Don’t worry, no Brandon Morrow situation here… yet.
RHSP Juan Ramirez and RHSP Michael Pineda have both looked great this spring, which of course is good news. Pineda’s velocity is up a few ticks as well, upping his prospect profile a bit.
RHP Maikel Cleto hasn’t been heard from all spring. It could be something minor, but JAC wonders if he’s among the Dominican prospects involved in a fraudulent documents investigation. We’ll see what happens there.
Great stuff as always from JAC.

I don’t really think Aumont would be affected by the High Desert environment. He’s a pitcher that is going to miss bats and/or induce a ton of ground balls.

Aumont’s stuff may be good enough to weather the environment down at High Desert, but because of his age going to HD may prove to be his undoing. A lot of good pitchers have gone to the Cal League and learned ego-crushing humility. THAT is the biggest problem with a young prospect, IMHO.
