Cuts, Round Two

Four more Spring Training cuts rolled in today, and these four were even less surprising than some of the first batch.
First basemen Tommy Everidge and Brad Nelson along with outfielders Greg Halman and Mike Wilson have been reassigned to minor league camp.
Everidge was basically brought to the organization in case they weren’t able to land someone like Ryan Garko. Now that Garko is on board, and even more so that Mike Sweeney is swinging a hot stick, Everidge is just someone to tuck away just in case. Similar situation for Nelson, the left handed version of Everidge.
Halman wasn’t expected to find a spot after a rough 2009. He’ll try to get back on track at AA West Tenn and/or AAA Tacoma this season. Cutting him uses an option year as he’s on the 40-man roster. More on him when his name comes up for the 40-man series.
Wilson wasn’t about to find a spot on the team either, but I hope he catches a few breaks in the next couple of seasons. I always feel bad for should-be football players who are lured into pro baseball by the post-high school payday. Wilson has some big power, good athleticism for his size and a pretty good eye at the plate, but swings and misses too much and has a hard time staying healthy.
