News & Notes: Corcy, Vargas, Saunders

by ~ April 30th, 2009 at 8:13 pm

RHRP Roy Corcoran has been placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained neck.  Hard to tell if the DL stint is really necessary, but Seattle just wanted him to go away for a little while.  Taking his place is LHP Jason Vargas.  Vargas came over in the Putz trade and has been stellar in a starting role with the Rainiers thus far.  It’ll be nice to have a southpaw in the ‘pen that isn’t Cesar Jimenez.

In other news, OF Michael Saunders has finally been activated and started tonight’s game in Tacoma (1-4 with a homer).  He had been dealing with some pretty serious shoulder trouble and it’s great to see him back and healthy.

Shoulders are damn tough to rehab and come back from. His took longer than I thought it would considering he isn’t a pitcher. I wonder what sort of “release” criteria the Mariner medics employed prior to letting him play.

I wonder if ’08 was just a year that Corky caught lightening in a mason jar. Last year he was always within inches of the strike zone without getting too much of it (kind of like what we are seeing from Jakubauskas). Corky doesn’t have a real “out” pitch, so if his command goes away a little bit he’s toast. Jakubauskas is kind of in that same mold.
