Dealing Bedard

by ~ May 27th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Looks like Dave from USS Mariner and Larry Stone of the Seattle Times have kicked off the summer trade and speculation season in Seattle, so we may as well dive right in.

Erik Bedard has been as good as originally advertised this season and relatively healthy, making him an attractive rotation upgrade for contenders and fringe teams.  He’s a free agent after the season so his value can only go so high, but he should be able to bring back some decent prospects.

The Philadelphia Phillies are the team that has popped up several times over the past two seasons in connection with Bedard.  They could use his services, but what do they have to offer?  Their top prospect the last few seasons has been RHSP Carlos Carrasco.  I’ve read mixed reviews but he’s sounds like a good prospect with a decent ceiling who is close to the majors, and getting him would certainly help restock the organization’s RHSP depth.  SS Jason Donald would be someone that Seattle should be targeting as well.  The Phillies obviously have a pretty good middle infield at the big league level making Donald somewhat expendable, but they’ve shown in the past that they won’t give him up easily.  There aren’t many people concerned with his bat even with the 2009 struggles– he’s got above average power for a middle infielder and works the counts– but there are some concerns about his ability to stick at shortstop.  Hey, if he can handle second base that would be helpful to the Seattle Mariners organization as well.

After the Jake Peavy deal fell through I thought that the Chicago White Sox could become a suitor for Bedard as well.  LHSPs Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard were part of that deal, and both pitchers would be nice fits at Safeco Field.  The Sox and Mariners were talking trade preseason, so maybe a larger deal could be worked out.

Other fits?  The Milwaukee Brewers could use another top starter, and Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik is obviously familiar with their system.  Someone mentioned to me yesterday that the majority of the Seattle brass were in attendance for one of Tacoma’s games against Milwaukee affiliate Nashville, for what that’s worth.  SS Alcides Escobar would be an improvement over YuBet right now.

Hard to say at this point who else could be in the running come July (if Bedard remains in Seattle colors that long)– Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Blue Jays?  Feel free to submit your ideas and insight.

    My idea is sign Bedard.

Make every effort to….If you lose him you just end up looking for another Bedard. In terms of comparing to recent years…he’s probably going to be cheap (well..all free agents will be generally).

Build your staff around a Felix and Bedard duo. Plug in a RRS or Vargas or Olson or Morrow ( I like Vargas!)…and you’ve got a great beginning.

You might not be able to sign him….But before you ship him down the road and then wish you had him for the next 3 seasons…try to sign him up.

Try hard. You’ve got a whole bunch of Beltre dollars to invest….throw a bunch of them his way.

I wouldn’t be at all disappointed by a Bedard extension but the team definitely needs to fill a few holes on the organizational depth chart and Bedard brings back more than any of our other trade chips. He’ll be a free agent in the offseason whether they trade him or not; they can approach him with a multiyear deal then.

The Phillies top prospect is OF Dominic Brown. Jason Donald also has like a 10% chance at sticking at SS from what I have read.

I heard some commentator mention the Dodgers as a possible suitor for Bedard, but I don’t know that they need pitching help. I do know they have plenty of young budding stars we could really use.

Brown is a good prospect as well, yes. Good tools, lefty bat, plate discipline… Still a bit green but yes I’d take him in a heartbeat.

I personally like Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard for Bedard. And yeah throw some money at him in FA and see if he really “loves Seattle.” What do you think we get back for Washburn?

  • ajolson85

i think the phillies are keeping carrasco, but i would take michael taylor, j.a. happ, brad harman, dominic brown, any combo i would be happy with. if its the whitesox i really like richard and tyler flowers. if brewers i like matt gamel and john lucroy.

washburn wont bring us back too much but just be glad we are getting something for him. i just want to know whats going to happen with beltre. as much as i want to keep bedard it would almost be stupid not to trade him. another question is do we keep branyan or trade him to a team like the mets looking for a first baseman?

I wouldn’t be opposed to extending him, but I want to be sure of what we’re extending. I would like to see us trade him though. Bedard for Brett Wallace. Ha!

Why not trade some bullpen arm while you’re at it like Aardsma or something it might be the next JJ Putz trade! Or something boring like the Aurthur Rhodes trade I dunno…

EriKKKKKKKK BEdard could get us quite a bit of talent back. I say he’ll go to the Jays because he’s Canadian if a trade happens.(Which would kinda break my heart.)

  • Ianyo

What breaks my heart is seeing Adam Jones hit the crap out of the ball and this team horrible offensively.

I’d really like to see us get a young, middle of the order power bat via trade. We sure need something to be excites about offensively.

Our rotation is scary bad without Bedard and Washburn next year. After Felix there is Silva, RRS, Vargas, & Feierabend. We will have money to spend (around $45 mil coming off the books)

    Best Available Starters:
Josh Beckett – Boston Won’t likely let him go.
Brett Myers – Not worth the Gamble in the AL
    Ben Sheets – Injury Risk
Kevin Millwood – Getting old, Could prove something away from Texas
    Cliff Lee – $8mil option
    Jon Garland – $10mil option
    Brandon Webb – $8mil option

In my opinion Bedard is by far the best option of the available players on that list, and it is unlikely that we will be able to get more than one of the other names on that list via free agency. I don’t think that we can compete with a rotation that doesn’t include Bedard next year. Whatever we get in return for the trade won’t come into fruition for a couple years.

My move would be to try and resign Bedard. Trade Washburn, Beltre, Chavez, Branyan, Batista and Betancourt.

In the offseason go after player like Nick Johnson, Carl Crawford, Troy Glaus & Kevin Millwood.

Harden is on the list too but he’s an injury risk as well.

Aubrey Huff will be on the FA market as well.
