33-34

I haven’t done any game notes in ages, so…
- Veteran infielder Chris Woodward got the start at second base tonight and did well enough. Had a solid base hit and started a slick double play. Defensively he’s reliable and versatile but lacks range. Not as good a defender overall as Josh Wilson or Ronny Cedeno, but he’s going to put away what he gets his hands on and avoid the silly mistakes. Offensively he’s not great but it’s not hard to hit better than Cedeno and Wilson right now.
- How the hell did Jarrod Washburn come up with that grounder between his legs in the 4th? I don’t especially like Washburn off the field and his pitching often leaves much to be desired, but at times he is awfully fun to watch out there.
- I have never seen a shortstop range so far into the outfield as Yuniesky Betancourt did when he collided with Endy Chavez. I’m not going to blame Yuni for breaking rank, but there are few left fielders with the range of Chavez so you have to wonder what Yuni was thinking right there. I figure Yuni was running after the ball until he was called off, while Endy assumed that Yuni wasn’t going to go out that far. No reason to blame either guy, it was just an unfortunate accident. They went knee to knee and it looked like Endy hyperextended it pretty severely. Right now they’re saying he could have some significant ligimate damage and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he’s done for the year.
- Justin Upton is going to be a big time power hitter as he progresses. I know that’s not saying anything new and that he’s already well on his way, but I’m amazed at the tree trunks he has for legs at age 21. At age 21 you’d expect him to look more like his brother or Adam Jones– that is, skinny as hell but very projectable– but his legs are already on the Albert Pujols/Alex Rodriguez path. I’m a firm believer that most power comes from the legs, and he’s going to be a monster.
- Could there be a more boring pitching matchup in Major League Baseball this year? Honestly, submit your picks.
- Tony Clark is one of my favorite non-Mariners ever. I don’t know why but I’ve just loved watching the big man play since he first popped up in the late-90s.
- I just saw a man with a sparkly pink and silver youth baseball mitt on, with no children in sight.
- The Griffey bomb brought a huge smile to my face. I’m watching the game after the fact and knew it was coming, and it’s still an amazing sight. Way to go, Kid.
- Carlos Silva laying a wet one on the side of Junior’s face was a sight as disturbing as the Endy collision. I didn’t need to see that, but I suppose it’s good to see all the guys in good spirits despite all the tough breaks the team has been getting.
- Rob Johnson with a hard hit triple. Karma felt bad for going overboard this week and decided that this one belongs to Seattle, apparently.
- How did Byrnes pull a 97 MPH chest high fastball? That doesn’t happen if Aardsma mixes in one slider in there at some point. Of course, as I type this he throws one and it goes for a wild pitch.
- Aardsma weeeee!
