Carp to MLB, Bedard to 15-day DL

Don’t have much time as I’ve got one foot out the door on my way to PGE Park for Ryan Rowland-Smith’s start, but 1B Mike Carp has been promoted to Seattle while Erik Bedard has been placed on the 15-day DL.

Bedard hitting the DL isn’t a surprise at all.  Normally I’d be really disappointed, but after the “minor” shoulder problems this was far too predictable.

Carp is up to take Russell Branyan’s spot when he hits the BL to attend his grandfather’s funeral.  Once he returns I would expect Carp to get sent down and another pitcher to be brought up, possible RRS if he pitches well and gets his velocity up tonight.

Say goodbye to trading Bedard, at least at peak value.  Type-B compensation or a cheap extension may be the best case at this point, but we’ll see how Bedard does in July (assuming he comes back, which is too much to assume no matter how minor all this seems now).

Very happy to see Carp up with the team. Crushed to hear about Bedard, I knew it was going to happen. So much for trade value or a chance at type A compensation. I knew we should have traded him in May when he was on a roll. Bill Bavasi still haunts us, does he not?

  • SABR Matt

Who gives a crap about trade value…this Bedard injury is GREAT news if your goal is to sign Bedard to a below-market-value extension. That’s what we should be focusing on this winter.

And all of a sudden Jarrod Washburn is one of the best pitchers on the trading block.

I agree with SABR…time to sign Bedard to an extension…we lost Jones, Sherrill, Tillman (ouch, ouch, ouch) so I think we better get our money’s worth out of the trade and lock down this guy! I’d be fine with trading Wash while he’s hot! At least keep two solid guys at the top of the rotation and build the youngsters around ‘em…

I know this is off topic but, how is Chad Cordero doing do we still have him?
Yes I agree keeping him, I like the one two punch when hes healthy.

no sense in “what if”. sign him cheap. ill take 25 starts from him the next couple seasons.

  • SABR Matt

Bedard isn’t THAT fragile…he’s good for 20 starts PER SEASON at least…and when he pitches, he’s lights out. Sign him for about what you think he’s worth if he can only make 20 starts per year…that’s 10-13 million per year.

Offer him 4/52 and he’ll jump at it. I guarantee it.

10-13M on a one year, sure, but if you’re extending him 3 or 4 years he has to take a discount. That’s a lot of guaranteed money for someone so volatile.

  • SABR Matt

Jon…even with all of the injuries, Bedard has been worth more than 10-13 mil in all but one season since 2006…including this one ALREADY and it’s not even half over.

What he’s worth to the team and what he’s likely to get are two separate things. No one will give him 4/52. He’s going to have to choose between getting paid on a short contract or giving up some pay for the security of a longer deal.

I’ll eat my words if I’m wrong, but I just don’t see a long and lucrative deal for someone that already has one shoulder and one elbow surgery under his belt, as well hip, knee and oblique injuries. The Yankees are the only team that would pony up that kind of cash.

I’d start feeling uneasy offering him much more than 4/40 right now, but once Dr. Yocum inevitably finds something serious in his shoulder 4/36 sounds a bit better.

You don’t give 4/52 to someone who may be about to become the next Mark Mulder. Maybe 2/22 + 2 or 3 club options.

Gotta agree with Jon on this one. Bedard has value, yes. But, the injuries he’s had, even if they are only 15-Day DL stints shatter his dreams of a 4/52, like SABR Matt proposed.

I’d sign him to a 4 year deal, but no way am I shelling out 52 million on a guy who gets hurt by a strong wind.
