Draft Coverage

Just wanted to let everyone know how we’re going to do draft coverage this afternoon.  We decided that frantically trying to publish a post after each pick announcing the selection and adding a scouting reports was going to result in a headache and rushed material, so instead I’ll be posting each pick via the Twitter widget on the right sidebar and then at the end of the day Rob and I will have a detailed writeup with all the picks and the corresponding scouting reports, our thoughts on the pick and who we might have taken instead, etc.  Hope that works for everyone.  Maybe I’ll have a post that I update with each pick– just the names.

Also, I’ve noticed the traffic spiking the last couple of days undoubtedly because of everyone rushing around trying to catch up on what’s happening with the draft.  Most of the people coming to this site looking for last minute draft coverage are probably getting disappointed.  Not because it’s not there, it’s just buried, so here’s a rundown of some of the draft stuff we’ve posted in the last couple of weeks.

  • To start things off we had some reader discussion on who the M’s should take at number two, namely Dustin Ackley and Tanner Scheppers.
  • Here is Rob’s profile of Dustin Ackley.
  • Rob did a three parter (1, 2, 3) featuring mini scouting reports on 15 guys that Seattle could take at #27 and 33.  Obviously the draft boards are looking a little different right now than they were when these were written, but most of these guys are still viable options for Seattle at those picks.
  • Here’s some talk regarding why Seattle may not be able to take the best player available with each selection.  Here’s a post discussing some of the possibilities, namely Crow, Matzek, Paxton and Scheppers.
  • And finally last night I responded to a readers question regarding Ackley vs. Jeremy Reed.

Some of that is slightly out of date.  Basically, Ackley has about a 99% probability of being taken number two at this point based on what I’m hearing, though I still wouldn’t be shocked to hear Crow or even Matzek’s name called.  The theory up until today was that Seattle would probably jump at one of the high priced arms that fall to them at 27, but right now that may not be the case as Jason A. Churchill posted a rumor on his Twitter feed that Seattle could be going cheap with that pick.  That would put Steve Baron’s status up in the air.

I think everyone is going to be surprised at how this goes down.  A couple teams are going to complicate things with oddball picks in the top 10 or 15.
