M’s Call Up Burke, DFA Stark

Rob Johnson has an instep injury and will be out for a few days but doesn’t figure to hit the DL.  Jaime Burke has been added to the 40-man roster and called up to fill in.  He’ll get the start today.  Denny Stark has been designated for assignment to make room for Burke. [Source=Baker]

Stark was on Seattle’s roster for way too long.  He’s not a Major League pitcher at this point.  I don’t see anyone claiming him so he’ll probably be kept around, but I could do with not seeing him in Seattle colors again.  His comeback made for a nice fluff story but not for an effective bullpen.

This also means that Jeff Clement will take over as Tacoma’s backup catcher.  Jason Churchill told me yesterday that Clement is 100% and will start getting reps at catcher and first base, but don’t expect him to eat into Adam Moore’s playing time much.  I’ve been saying it since the knee started bugging him again, but I think it’s very safe to say that Clement will not be a catcher for Seattle.  He’ll compete for a 1B/DH spot on next year’s team. [UPDATE - Scratch that.  Low minors roster filler Fleming Baez has been moved up to Tacoma for the time being to be the backup.  Clement is healthy, though.]

I’d also like to pose this question to you, dear reader: Is Rob Johnson any better than Guillermo Quiroz at this point?  They’re both known for their defensive abilities and the way they handle the staff, but are both rubbish with the stick.  What say you?

Also worth noting, YuBet is out of the lineup for the third straight day!  Keep ‘em coming!

Why not DL Johnson? Is it because Johnson is sooo much better than Burke, Quiroz or a brick wall?

I love Wak but he has a unsubstantiated love for Mr. Johnson.
