Very nice musings on how the team should go from this point forward. Personally, I've been getting a good vibe of late that it may be possible to resign Bedard. If this is even remotely possible I am fully on that bandwagon. Our "good" SP depth in our system is still a couple of years away, and I cringe when I think of going into next year without Bedard or Washburn. A rotation of Felix, RR-S, Vargas, Silva and ? ... just doesn't give me any warm fuzzies. You resign one or both of Bedard and Washburn and our SP problems are placed on hold.

When I got to see Garrett Olson up close down at ST it really stood out for me how he was able to handle lefties and how righties had their way with him. Granted, those were ST observations. One thing about Olson in the BP is that I've come around a bit and think that he could be a servicable BP arm and not just a LOOGY. He would be great as just a LOOGY, but he has enough stuff to handle midling righties as well. Righties who know what they are doing? Well, that's another story all together.

Why do we automatically lose out on a chance to sign Bedard and Branyan next season if we trade them?

How does it make any sense to risk Bedard not being a Type A when we could probably trade him for at least one ML ready player and prospects and offer him a deal in the offseason and possibly sign him again?

I don't get it. Trade them all away and build for the future because we all know we don't have what it takes to compete in the playoffs.

I also vote we trade Jose Lopez. He is not good defensively and is not a good fit in Safeco field.

I go back and forth on Bedard. I would definitely like to have him here for the next several years and hope Z spends the money. I honestly don't think the chances of signing him in the offseason change any if they trade him now or keep him as he will go to the highest bidder and not sign until the offseason anyway. But as a probable type B free agent, I believe they should try and get some other pieces for him now and take their chances later. Without the type A pricetag it would be a great way to pull in some talent and still try and sign an ideal Safeco pitcher.

I'm in favor of trading Aardsma, Betancourt, Washburn, Batista and Beltre. I'm not in favor of trading Bedard or Branyan.

Building for the future should NEVER begin with trading two of the four most important players to your current success, and Branyan is unlikely to get much back in a trade given what position he plays and his current age. I'll make this simple...Branyan has more value to the Mariners than he does to any other contender. Extend him. Now.

Same for Bedard...both of whom are players ideally suited for Safeco Field.

Guys I build around in 2010:

Bedard
Hernandez
Morrow (haven't given up hope yet)
Branyan
Lopez
Gutierrez
Ichiro

The rest can be juggled around however Zduriencik likes, and chances are, whoever he gets for guys like Washburn, Beltre, Aardsma, Batista...will be able to contribute to 2010's team if not this one.
