Tyler Johnson Released
by Jon ~ June 6th, 2009
The Mariners signed rehabbing LHRP Tyler Johnson to a minor league deal over the offseason. The Mariners went into the season without a lefty in the ‘pen thinking that Johnson would be able to join the team sooner than later.
Unfortunately, Johnson just never progressed. I saw him a couple nights ago in Tacoma and while his slider looked promising his fastball velocity was terrible. According to the stadium gun he was sitting 84-85 with the heater, bottoming at 83 MPH a couple times and topping out at 88 once. He only recorded one out and gave up a walk and a grand slam. He was released after the outing, according to Ryan Divish.
Garrett Olson probably sticks in the ‘pen all year unless Ryan Rowland-Smith or Jason Vargas falter.

Im fine with Vargas staying in the rotation. No need to rush RRS.

Rats! Now we lost both Tylers. Walker is doing pretty well right now.

Luis — Vargas won’t lose his spot to RRS. Jakubauskas/Olson would.
Walker would be really useful right about now. Hindsight 20/20 but that didn’t seem like a great decision at the time.

when will Silva be back to his April 2008 form? lol
IS he tipping pitches or something, or does he just suck.

Silva is on the DL until at least mid August with a frayed rotator cuff.
So…Our rotation right now is Felix (R), Bedard (L), Washburn (L), Vargas (L), Rowland-Smith (L)?
That’s an awful lot of lefty control-type pitchers in one rotation.
