All-Star Lineups [UPDATED]
by Rob T. ~ July 6th, 2008 at 12:19 am
AL
C Joe Mauer
1B Kevin Youkilis
2B Dustin Pedroia
SS Derek Jeter
3B Alex Rodriguez
OF Ichiro Suzuki
OF Manny Ramirez
OF Josh Hamilton
DH David Ortiz (Milton Bradley takes his spot)
SP Cliff Lee
NL
C Geovany Soto
1B Lance Berkman
2B Chase Utley
SS Hanley Ramirez
3B Chipper Jones
OF Alfonso Soriano
OF Kosuke Fukudome
OF Ryan Braun
SP Brandon Webb
There are more deserving starters then Pedroia, Jeter, Ichiro, Manny, Soto, Soriano, and Fukudome but since Red Sox, Yankees and Cubs fans make up most of the country this is what we get. Brandon Webb also shouldn’t be the starter for the NL with more deserving players in Volquez and Lincecum but hey at least Ichiro is starting again. The reserves will be announced on Sunday and I hope Brandon Morrow makes the squad. If Hideki Okajima could make it as a setup man last year then Morrow should make it with similar if not better numbers this year, but Terry Francona makes the selections and he’s probably never even heard of Morrow.
UPDATE: Reserves announced and Griffey was beat out by Braun on the last week of voting.

So we get a lazy overpaid #2 starter and the O’s get an All-Star and Adam Jones???
In hindsight this trade could end up being worse than the Slocumb for Varitek/Lowe trade…

The only reason why Sherrill made the All-Star team was because he was the only Orioles player who could have made it. His numbers are not very good. He has a lot of saves but you can put any capable reliever as their closer and they would have the same amount of saves. There are plenty of relievers who are better then Sherrill who didnt make the all-star team. Just because he is an all-star doesnt mean he deserves it. Jason Varitek has a .218 average and he is worse then a replacement level player which is an absolute joke. Brian Wilson made the team with a 4.37 ERA only because he has 24 saves instead of picking someone who deserved it like Cole Hamels but they always overate saves when picking these teams.

The Slocumb deal was so bad because Varitek was the catcher that Seattle really could have used towards the end of Danny Wilson’s reign and during the gap until Johjima came along. He is also a great leader and a World Series team captain, something this team could use. Now he’s a backup level catcher (offensively), as Rob mentioned, but his impact, let alone Derek Lowe’s, could have been pretty significant. Good all around catchers are tough to come by. I don’t regret giving up Adam Jones, even though he is hitting the cover off the ball as of late. He’s an outfielder and there are a lot of great outfielders up for grabs and some very good ones in the Mariners system (Balentien, Saunders, Halman.. many others are various levels). I will almost guarentee that giving up Tillman and Butler will hurt us much more than giving up Jones.

Also, Bedard isn’t overpaid. $9M ain’t bad nowadays for any starter. I assume you meant ‘that we overpaid for’..?

Bedard makes $7M. Also this isn’t as bad as the Slocumb deal with the main reason being they will be able to trade Bedard and get some good prospects back. It won’t be as much as the original deal but they will get something good.

9 next year? I have 9 in my head for some reason.
I dunno about good prospects. With his sore shoulder and overall injury concerns, I dunno how much of a haul we’ll get for him. We can only hope for a bidding war, but with some big names still available that may be tough.

I actually meant to put “All-Star” in that original comment….but I still think this is a raw deal…Bedard’s value is going down by the hour…He can’t stay healthy and has a terrible work ethic…We’d be lucky to get two prospects back as good as Tillman and Butler right now…
And I certainly wasn’t talking about Varitek RIGHT NOW by any means he’s over the hill…Him and Lowe would’ve been great for the Mariners in the middle of the years we were contenders.
Slocumb blew the whole time he was a Mariner and then was gone…
Bedard is going to blow the whole time he’s a Mariner….and then be gone.
Jones and Sherrill are already quality contributors for their team and Tillman and Butler could be in the future.
And Bedard is OVERPAID…Anybody who only has to work every 5th day and then acts like a bitch on that one day a week they have to work is overpaid….If he had a good work ethic it’d be different….
