Sexson Released, Bedard on DL

by ~ July 10th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Hey, a Dustin appearance! Sorry about the mini-break I took, I was on a rampant job search. I was shut down. But hey, I’m not the only person who was shut down. Read below and enjoy!

I only wish I knew the number of people out there thinking, “It’s about time…” Well, I agree with you all. After 2 years of Mario Mendoza hitting, the Mariners have had enough. Sexson, the subject of prolonged boo’s at Safeco, was released, along with the rest of his $14M contract. After hitting .205 in 2007, he followed up with a .218 in 2008, leading the team to ending their ties with him. I am surprised it took this long, to be honest.

Also news, and less exciting, the Mariners have placed glass arm Erik Bedard on the DL. The move is retroactive to July 5, meaning he can return on July 20. He apparently has stiffness in his left shoulder, preventing him from taking the mound.

Tacoma Rainiers pitcher Jared Wells and infielder Tug Hulett were called up to fill the roster spots.

    Hulett = Cairo and Bloomquist..

    ????

    Anyway, I saw Hulett and Wells the other day in Portland. Hulett is actually swinging the bat pretty well. Wells had a scoreless outing, but didn’t show outstanding stuff, from my viewpoint anyway.

    From what I’ve read, Wells isn’t anything special. He’s not going to be with the big club long. Felix will take his roster spot.

    Hulett will be gone as soon as LaHair is called up. I think that LaHair is going to be taking Sexson’s spot. Hulett is just a stopgap until LaHair is healthy. From what I’ve heard, he’s sorta injured right now.

    I hope LaHair is called up eventually, not because I think he’ll be great, but just because we’ve been hearing quite a bit about him and it’ll be nice to see him play on a regular basis.

    I’ve said this many times before that LaHair is basically Ben Broussard. Now, if everything (and I mean everything) clicks for him, he becomes a Casey Kotchman type, but that’s a stretch.

    Riddle me this, though: Why is Vidro still around? Sexson was performing better than him!

    in my humble opinion, maybe we should CRAP can Turbo and try playing a hot hand like Hulett I have a sneaking hunch he might be able to improve
    over that mighty 217 BA that our joke of a DH has.

    We should of had a 2 for 1 fire sale with Sexson AND Vidro.

    Neither Vidro or Sexson were moveable because of their performance + contract. I would have loved for this to have happened though. With Sexson we lose 6 million dollars, which totally sucks. One thing I am a fan of is playing the hot hand, like Jon said. I’ve heard a lot of good about LaHair. I’ve never read about that Broussard comarison, but I can see it just by the numbers. Random stints of power, line drives, left handed. I would love to see a Kotchman, but indeed, that would be a stretch.
