One Hitter

Congratulations to Jarrod Washburn on the one hitter and near perfect game.

I don’t think that was the best I’ve ever seen Washburn, but the results were sparkling.  He had great control but spotty command with his breaking stuff, but a little luck and some solid defense made him look marvelous.

That was a team one hitter, which is pretty cool.

This game has inspired a poll question for you all:

What type of no hitter would you rather see?  One where the pitcher is dominate and taking it upon himself, such as Nolan Ryan’s 1973 no-no when he fanned 17; or one where it’s a complete team effort filled with lots of balls in play and defensive gems, like the one we almost saw tonight or perhaps like Chris Bosio’s 1993 no-no?

Both would have a completely different excitement.  The dominate one you’d know you were watching something special from the get go.  You may not catch on to the defensive one right away, but towards the end you start holding your breath on every ball that comes off the bat.

There is another option, which is a little bit of both.  I would say that about Felix Hernandez’s near no-no back in 2007 if I remember correctly.  He was dominate at times and you got the feeling you might be witnessing something special, but being a ground ball pitcher he definitely kept the defense on their toes.
