Washburn Traded to Tigers

Mike Salk of 710 ESPN Radio has a pair of tweets and a blog post up saying that Jarrod Washburn has been dealt to the Detroit Tigers.  I haven’t seen it confirmed anywhere else yet.

Update: FOX’s John Paul Morosi says the Mariners receive LHSP Luke French plus another prospect.

Update: MLB Network says the second prospect is Mauricio Robles.

First Impressions:

At first I was a little disappointed with the haul, but that may have been my own fault for thinking Washburn held more value than he did.  This is a very solid deal.

The Mariners received two left handed pitchers in return for Washburn.

Luke French is holding his own in his first big league stint.  Decent command of 88-92 heater, okay slider and plus change.  I might slot him ahead of Jason Vargas on the LHSP depth chart but I’m not sure he’s better than Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Mauricio Robles is listed at 5’10 180 but throws 90-94.  Walks a lot but is said to have decent command overall (if that makes sense).  Breaker has potential.  Will have to get a third pitch going consistently to avoid the bullpen.  He’ll probably take Nathan Adcock’s High Desert rotation spot.  He’s the key to this deal.

I think we’ll see another move or two before 1pm.

    good trade

Salk seems to get a lot of his info from Drayer, so I’d trust him in general on stuff. :)

    A scoop thief!

I guess this closes the book on a Washburn extension. Between Vargas, Rowland-Smith and French we should have plenty of lefties to choose from next year, not to mention Olson (bleh), Nick Hill and anyone else that might come along.

This trade is awesome. Now we just need to get enough starting pitchers for next year that we dont have to put Olsen out there.

I like the trade, I think it puts us in a good position for next year. So I have a few questions now speculating on next year…

What do you think the rotation will look like? I think it’ll be:

    1. Felix
    2. RRS (I hope Bedard is gone)
    3. Snell
    4. French
    5. Morrow (if he can put it together), possibly a cheap veteran we sign, or some other internal option

Now that Wash is gone, and with the idea that Branyan and Bedard will be gone too, will we have a chance of resigning Beltre?

What do you think the lineup will look like? (For me, I’m assuming the Branyan and Bedard leave so we get Beltre back, as I’m under the impression this is realistic.)

    1. Ichiro RF
    2. Gutierrez CF
    3. Lopez 2B
    4. Beltre 3B
    5. Branyan/FA/Internal Option DH
    6. Shelton/Carp 1B
    7. Saunders LF
    8. Moore/Johnson C
    9. Wilson SS

After reading USSM I guess we could potentially sign Branyan and Beltre, which is why I included both in there.

So what’re your opinons on the rotation, the lineup, and the chances we keep Beltre?

When it comes to Beltre it’s not really about having the money or not having the money. He has to want to come back, and I haven’t seen anything that says he would like to stick around. I think he can’t wait to get back to the NL.

Free agents also tend to care about money more than anything. So I think the question is whether we can offer him enough money or not.

Solid trade. The young kid in the minors sounds like a potentially good pitcher and french seems solid. Sounds like a cheaper version of washburn. Gives up lots of flyballs. I think his numbers will improve now that he gets to pitch in safeco.
