Washburn and Ibanez Claimed On Waivers

by Rob T. ~ August 13th, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez have been claimed on waivers. There has been a lot of conflicting reports out there on this but Ken Rosenthal has the scoop, saying both players have indeed been claimed. Washburn was not claimed by the Yankees. The Mariners have until tomorrow to work out a trade with whatever team claimed Washburn or Ibanez.

UPDATE: Prospect Insider’s Jason Churchill is reporting that the Mariners have until 10:30 Thursday morning to work out a deal for these guys, according to team sources.

UPDATE #2: Geoff Baker has recieved confirmation that Washburn and Ibanez have been claimed.

If it’s the Rays that claimed Ibanez, we may be able to get something worthwhile out of their rich farm system. Or there’s the chance that Boston put in a claim to block the Rays.

Otherwise, it could have realistically been the Tigers, Blue Jays or Rangers.

As far as Washburn, it could be a bunch of different teams, even with the Yankees and White Sox uninterested (reportedly). Pitching is always in high demand.

Several people are saying that KJR is reporting Ibanez is going to the Rays, but don’t hold your breath. More when we get it.

I don’t see the Rays offering anything decent for Ibanez … just me. I think they might offer something like Desmond Jennings and Eduardo Morlan, because they know that Seattle wants two prospects, but I don’t really think either of those guys are going to be any good at the major league level, especially given their struggles this season.

Tonight is the reason the Rays (if they are indeed the ones who claimed him) that the Rays will offer a decent package. They just lost their best power source throughout 08, and their left fielder. In getting Ibanez, they get both.

Teams can give up a lot when they get desperate. TB didn’t make a deadline deal, couldn’t get Brian Giles, and they certainly need some help. If it was them who made the claim, they’re not going to let Raul slip away. They knew of Seattle’s high demands before making the claim, so they wouldn’t make it just for kicks.

    Should know in the morning.

Yo, screw Brian Giles. They lost out on Jason Bay because the Pirates got super, super greedy and asked for way too much. It got nixed at the last minute. I hope they claimed Ibanez because they will overpay in need (sound familiar Mariners off 07/08 offseason?)
