More Adventures In Injuries

by ~ August 8th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

The Mariners just announced that shortstop Jack Wilson broke the fifth metacarpal in his right hand (the bone in your hand that leads to your pinkie) and will be seeing a hand specialist tomorrow.  Such an injury will almost certainly lead to a DL stint.

How did Jack Wilson acquire that injury, though? There have been no plays on the field lately that would suggest something like that would have happened.  Well, per Ryan Divish (via Twitter), he slipped and fell in his bathroom last night, hitting his hand trying to break his fall.

I wish I was kidding.

Update (Jon): Out about 6 weeks.

Who gets called up will be interesting.

Woodward perhaps. But you know what you have there. A guy who is plugging away at AAA with .235-.305-.333 numbers. his future with the M’s doesn’t exist.

Mangini? Maybe…..but then you have to guarantee that he plays at third. Lopez sits or plays first (Which might mean they dump Kotchman. I might buy into this one)

Mike Wilson? Pleeeeeeeeeeze!!!!!!!!! Pleeeeeeze!!!!!! Pleeeeeeze do this one! Just move Tui or Josh Wilson to short and the other guy becomes you emergency 2B-SS-3B.
Then PLAY M. Wilson a bunch. In left or DH him…but play him and let’s see what we have. This move makes too much sense for Z to do it. And it looks to the M’s future. Ergo….It will not happen.

Ackley? After M. Wilson, this makes the next most sense…..But it fritters away a supposed option year (like it matters with Ackley…MLB him for 3 years and then throw a bunch of cash at him. He’s going to be good.). It will not happen either.

I’m betting on Ramon Vasquez. He hit .290 in the majors as late as ’08. He’s about to be 34 years old, though……He will not be a M in the future. So this will be the move they make.

That’s my bet. I’m sticking to it.

Woodward is the most likely. Mangini leaves no backup SS, Mike Wilson does the same and has nowhere to play, Ackley isn’t ready (especially defensively), and Vasquez opted out of his contract almost two months ago.

    Oops……No Vasquez, then. Woodward!

Actually I would dump Langerhans, too….and then you could bring up M. Wilson and Woodward.

Alas….I fear I will be frustrated.

Why would you dump Langerhans? He’s a much, MUCH better defender than Wilson (the more important factor for a 4th OF, which is all Wilson would be on this roster), and probably a better hitter, too.

Case can be made for Wilson > Langerhans in this situation considering the future. 4th OF isn’t all that important in the long run, so it might not be terrible to see what they have in Wilson at the expense of Langerhans (even though I like Langerhans). Or they could just wait for Sept/.

Curious injury. This bone is often broken punching someone/something when contact is made with the pinky side of the fist rather than the index and middle knuckles. Hmmmm

It can’t hurt the team no matter who they bring in. I’m getting a feeling the team is going to play half-way decent before the season is over and blow our high draft pick opportunity out of the water. We’ve dropped down to a tie for third pick with Arizona. The way Bucky Showalter has the Os playing I thought we had a chance to go for the gold.

Langerhans has value to a contender, not this team.

The M’s problem right now….and looking to next year is not OF defense. they need some offense. M. Wilson as a 4th OF (perhaps in a platoon with Saunders in left)/DH type has some potential to really help. Let’s see if that potential is a reality. Langerhans has 86 PA’s this year. He had 122 for Seattle last year . Over those two years he’s hit .213 with an OBP of .332. He’s hit 6 HR’s. (Those numbers are about how he performed the two seasons previous in Washington).

I’m pretty confident that Mike Wilson will hit AT LEAST .213 with a .332 OBP, given the opportunity in Seattle. His upside is better. And he might mash.

Were I the Yankees or Rangers (or, better yet, an NL team where you actually can use a LH PH) I would love Langerhans. He seems a blue collar type.

but he’s simply in the way of a guy who may well be WAY better…and offer something this team most needs, Dr. Longball.

That said, I’m to the conclusion that Z can certainly make the “news flash” acquisition. I’m not sure he can put together a roster, however.
