M’s Fire Wakamatsu, Van Burkleo, Adair

by ~ August 9th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

The Seattle Mariners have fired manager Don Wakamatsu, bench coach Ty Van Burkleo, pitching coach Rick Adair and  performance coach Steve Hecht.

Tacoma manager Daren Brown will take over as manager, catching coordinator Roger Hansen steps in as bench coach, minor league pitching coordinator Carl Willis has been tabbed as the next Mariner pitching coach.

Some reaction, analysis, etc once this sets in and we get some quotes from GM Jack Zduriencik.

Can’t say that I like Adair being let go with the others. But if Adair had to leave for Wak to be gone so be it.

The M’s need better players, not a new manager. We have an absolute black hole offensively at 3B, SS, C, and 1B. I know we all hope that Figgins moves back to 3B, Ackley to 2B, and Smoak at 1B but all those guys will struggle initially. The M’s brass needs to prepare the fanbase for the 2011 team to be terrible. If they need to lose 100 again next year so Ackley, Pineda, Smoak, et al. are 100% ready for the show so be it.

The M’s need to realize that grandiose gestures are not going to solve the missing bats in the line-up. The best pitchers in the world will not win a game without runs on the board.

Honestly, I think the fault is Lincoln and Armstrong’s. I believe they want to win, but they want to not lose money more. They reduced payroll by about $20 million last year and $10 million this year, all the while Jack Z still had to deal with dead money like Carlos Silva.

Because of the economy, they went cheap and we are seeing the results. I wish they would come out and say next year will be a rebuilding year instead of forcing off season moves to pretend they are contending.
