Upcoming DH Market

by ~ September 22nd, 2009 at 6:33 pm

When I noticed how deep the designated hitter market for the upcoming offseason was, my initial thought was that the Seattle Mariners could wind up with a solid DH by process of elimination.  But after looking through team depth charts it looks like there will be more ballclubs looking for DHs this year than normal.

The DH market figures to be made up of Jim Thome, Carlos Delgado, Bobby Abreu, Vladimir Guerrero, Aubrey Huff, Hideki Matsui, Gary Sheffield, and Jason Giambi among others, and could be bolstered by Jermaine Dye (club option not expected to be picked up) and Jack Cust (supposed non-tender candidate after down year at the plate at age 30).  That’s ten guys, some much better than others, which would normally make the DH supply much greater than the demand.  After all, there are only 14 American League teams.

But it seems to me that the Mariners, Blue Jays, Royals, Tigers, White Sox, Rangers, Angels, Athletics and perhaps the Yankees could be in the market for a DH.  That is over half the AL teams.  In the end, not all of these teams will sign a free agent DH, but a few will sign as position players meaning there will still be a more teams competing within the DH market than normal.  If the Mariners want to get one of the better players they’ll have to be somewhat aggressive, rather than waiting to see who’s left like last offseason (which left them with Ken Griffey).

There is a major difference between the 2008/2009 offseason and the 2009/2010 offseason for the Mariners however, and that is money.  Last offseason the team had to wait to see who was left teamless in hopes of landing a bargain.  This upcoming offseason they’ll have a lot more money to play with.  That doesn’t mean they’ll be sinking a ton of cash into these aging sluggers, but they’ll probably use more than the $4-5M or so that they had left last winter.

Vladimir Guerrero doesnt even bother taking his mitt onto the field anymore.

Sheeeesh. Give me Vlad. 13 straight seasons of over .300!

I suspect he may go pretty dear..What is that kind of guarantee worth for one year.

His age is suspect, perhaps….but he can flat out hit.

Delgado and Huff are lefties…but they ain’t Vlad.

BTW…I wouldn’t be surprised to see Branyan as our DH next year. Carp or another at 1B.

I agree that Vlad heads that class. I’d love to have him on the team so that we don’t have to watch him masacre the Mariners anymore!

As far as Branyan as the DH, I can definitely see that. It’s a bit of a waste because he’s not a bad defender, but if the team is concerned about his bat they could give him more time at DH.

I’ve mentioned before that the Mariners may go out and get a DH that can play 1B, and then have something like a 50/50 time share between 1B and DH. Delgado would fit in that scenario. A guy like Thome could manage at 1B for 1-2 games per week, but you wouldn’t want him out there for much more than that.

I would love a Jim Thome or Carlos Delgado signing. Not only would they be among the best options from a statistical standpoint, but especially when you look at Thome, you’re looking at adding yet another positive influence type veteran (this time one who can still hit), to a clubhouse that’s already in good spirits. In the scenario that we don’t keep Griffey or Sweeney, signing someone like Thome or Delgado could do a lot to fill that void in terms of the clubhouse vibe.

Is Hank Blalock a FA? He has had a nice comeback season.

Right now he sits at .240/.280/.470 over 460 plate appearances. I recall him going well for a short while, but that is not a “nice comeback season.” It’s a shame because I’ve always been a Blalock fan. He might be worth picking up on a one year deal with the hope of him rediscovering his plate discipline, but he’s not going to be a guy you want to count on.

Vladimir Guerrero is held together with silly string and duct tape…I’m dubious as to his ability to continue for much longer. The man can barely walk!

    • http://proballnw.com Jon Shields

Yes, but how long have they been saying that about him? You’re right that he can barely walk, and it’s been a few years since he didn’t look like an 80 year old when in motion, but he continues to put up big years. He’s a freak of nature.

It will all come down to how much money and how many years he’s seeking. Perhaps it won’t be worth the risk, but we’ll see how it plays out.

Vlad would be a great pick up. You can say he is held together with toothpicks and rubberbands, but when i saw him on August 31st he hit 2 homers in the upper tank. He will hit .300 and have 20 + homers and about 80 to 90 rbi “if” he is healthy. And I don’t want him hitting bombs against us anymore..
