Baseball Musings linked to this post and said they thought that using Michael Saunders would be a smarter choice than signing an aging veteran.

I agree with the concept, but only if the prospect is totally ready. As much as I love Saunders, I don't think he'll be ready by Opening Day. Give him at least another half-season in AAA.

As much as I would love for this move to happen, I give it like 1% of chance, and that is only because we were on Teixeira's radar not long ago as a team he'd like to play for. But, we're not going to be spenders this off-season. I'll eat my words if I'm wrong about this, but I think the organization would be dumb to not spend money on the right people, and Teixeira is one of those people, but the organization is just going to see the money, and not the production.

Not only does Teixeira fill a hole at first, he was statistically, according to +/- the best 1st baseman in the MLB in 2008, and this team lacks defense. Also, he is a switch hitter (spending most of his time from the left) with a lot of power.

I don't know anything about how he is in the clubhouse, if he's a vocal leader (something we need), but his production alone would be worth it.

WE NEED MARK TEIXEIRA! He would be a franchise player we could sign for the long haul and build around him, Felix and Morrow. He not only is a fantastic talent well worth the money, he is a veteran, classy leader in the clubhouse which is something that is currently lacking, as well as another spotlight name to market to the public. He would more pay for himself just in revenues of fans and merchandise, and with the current funk the M's are in, fan moral is nowhere near where it should be. He is the missing piece for fixing this puzzle!
