Non-tender Deadline

The non-tender deadline is sometime tomorrow, so we may as well take a look at Seattle’s arbitration eligible players:

Aaron Heilman: Newly acquired and useful enough that he’ll be tendered.

Jaime Burke: Seattle’s 40-man roster now stands at 39 players, and GM Jack Zduriencik could probably use a couple of extra spots.  A backup catcher is the last thing Seattle needs, so expect Burke to be non-tendered.  It’ll be a shame, because Burke is such a classy guy and it was a great story when he made Seattle’s roster a couple years ago.  He’s a very solid backup catcher, and I hope he finds a major league home.  There is a possibility that Burke could be retained through Spring Training to mentor Jeff Clement and Rob Johnson, but that would be a pretty classless move to dump him right before the season.

Erik Bedard: The last reports on his shoulder were positive, and he’s supposed to be starting a throwing sometime soon.  Bedard was only a non-tender candidate if he was expected to miss part of the 2009 season, but as of now he looks like he’ll be ready for Spring Training.

Felix Herandez: Not a chance.
