Rule 5 Picks

MLB phase: Reegie Corona, 22, New York Yankees. He’s now the frontrunner over Callix Crabbe, Tug Hulett and Chris Woodward to become Seattle’s next Willie Bloomquist.
Seattle was also traded cash for the Royals pick, LHRP Jose Lugo of the Minnesota Twins. Lugo will be making the jump all the way from high-A to the majors, unless Seattle negotiates with the Twins and receives the rights to Lugo, the way they did with R.A. Dickey last offseason (unlikely, unless he struggles in Spring Training).
Overall I’m fine with these picks. The teams have to take who they expect to stick in the big leagues all season, not necessarily who is the best talent. That said, I think Everth Cabrera would have been an interesting utility guy, and with way more speed and starting upside. Donald Veal, Eduardo Morlan and James Skelton were often regarded as the top talents in the draft pool, but Veal went 4th, Skelton went 15th and Morland went 25th.
I was kind of hoping we’d take a flier on Veal, and if we had any wiggle room whatsoever at the catcher position I would have jumped to get Skelton.
AAA phase: Patrick Ryan, 25, Milwaukee Brewers (surprise, surprise!). Possible Sean Green replacement down the road. Extreme groundball rates, but his walk rate went up and strikeout rate went down last season in AA.
Seattle lost a couple of RHPs Miguel Marquez, and Gerardo Esparza in the AAA phase. I doubt we’ll miss either one. Marquez was a so-so reliever in the lower levels, while Esparaza is still playing in Venezuela.
AA phase: No pick.
The Orioles took the only pick of this phase, and selected Seattle RHP Andrew Barb. Barb is a reliever with some promise, but is easily replaceable.
