What are the Nationals Doing?

The Washington Nationals have signed free agent Corey Patterson to a minor league deal, adding to an already confusing outfield logjam in Washington, that includes the likes of Lastings Milledge, Josh Willingham, Elijah Dukes, Austin Kearns, Willie Harris and Willie Mo Pena, plus three others on their 40-man roster.  Every team has a fourth outfielder, but a fifth sixth and seventh?

The obvious conclusion is that they’re planning on dealing some of last year’s outfielders, so if I’m Seattle I’m calling about Milledge, Willingham, Kearns, Dukes and possibly Harris (and first baseman Nick Johnson, while I’m at it) and finding out what they’re up to.

This probably doesn’t concern the Mariners, but it is one of the more fascinating storylines this winter.  What do they have up their sleeve?

That is very interesting. Dukes has crazy talent, but he seems to be a complete jerk. Milledge is talented too, but he just appears to be immature or at least he was with the Mets. That said; for the right price I’d take a chance on either one of those guys for LF. Johnson is a nice player, but I think we need more power then he has for 1B.

    Great stuff Jon!

I don’t know that Bowden has anything up his sleeve. He was interested in Willy Taveras and Joey Gathright at point this offseason as well. I’m not sure what he’s up too, but its odd.
