Who Is Left?

Last night I dreamed about baseball. I was practicing with someone who I recognized as a San Francisco Giants great, but I’m not really sure who it was.  I think it morphed from Kevin Mitchell to Bobby Bonds to Barry Bonds (one of these is not like the others), though it’s a little fuzzy.  Anyways, point being that I woke up with baseball on the brain, so instead of getting my day off to a productive start, I find myself on the blog.

A very quick look at draft returns since the end of the Pat Gillick era.

2003 – Gillick’s last draft with Seattle

Suspects: LHSP Ryan Feierabend

2004 – Bill Bavasi/Bob Fontaine’s first draft with Seattle

Prospects: 3B/2B Matt Tuiasosopo, OF Michael Saunders.  Big Leaguers: RHRP Mark Lowe, C Rob Johnson

2005

Suspects: LHP Robert Rohrbaugh.  Prospects: RHRP Anthony Varvaro

2006

Prospects: RHRP Ricky Orta, C Adam Moore, RHSP Doug Fister

2007

Suspects: OF Denny Almonte, LHSP Donnie Hume.  Prospects: 1B/OF Joe Dunigan, LHP Nick Hill.  Big Leaguers: RHRP Shawn Kelley

2008 – Bavasi/Fontaine’s last draft with Seattle

Suspects: CF Ryan Royster, C Travis Howell, C Tommy Johnson, LHSP Nick Czyz.  Prospects: RHRP Joshua Fields, 1B/RF Dennis Raben, RHSP Kenn Kasparek, RHSP Steve Hensley

Obviously, as we get closer to the present there are going to be more names as players have yet to be exposed or flame out or whatever.  I could have made cases for a few more guys getting on in 2007 and 2008.  2004 looks like it turned out okay considering Seattle’s lack of a first or second round pick.

The bulk of Seattle’s top prospects can be attributed to Bob Engle/international scouting and Jack Zduriencik/Tom McNamara.
