Snell Starting Sunday

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Cancel those tickets to Tacoma, Shannon Drayer is reporting via tweet that Ian Snell will start for the Mariners on Sunday, which was originally Jarrod Washburn’s day.  It was easy enough to connect the dots once today’s bullpen was announced, but the team tried to throw us off the trail by optioning him to AAA [...]

Anyone Else?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Jarrod Washburn as been sent out, but there is still a couple hours left until the deadline.  Is Jack Zduriencik done?
I see some relievers moving.  David Aardsma, Mark Lowe, Sean White and Miguel Batista are all candidates to be dealt to contenders looking for some bullpen help.  Aardsma and Lowe could bring the best haul [...]

Washburn Traded to Tigers

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Mike Salk of 710 ESPN Radio has a pair of tweets and a blog post up saying that Jarrod Washburn has been dealt to the Detroit Tigers.  I haven’t seen it confirmed anywhere else yet.
Update: FOX’s John Paul Morosi says the Mariners receive LHSP Luke French plus another prospect.
Update: MLB Network says the second prospect [...]

Low Blow

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Jim Moore describes his column over at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer website as “different, offbeat, unpredictable.”  I’m not a regular Moore reader, but it sounds like he’s trying to be edgy and sarcastic, which is fine.  But it’s my opinion that he crossed a line in his latest piece, a column that details Snell’s problems in [...]

Yankee Trade Chips

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

The New York Yankees have been a potential landing spot for Jarrod Washburn since last season, and now with just 15 hours until the trade deadline we get this tweet from SI’s Jon Heyman:

Elias Updates

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Short and sweet:

Erik Bedard is still solidly a Type B, though it may not matter because I don’t see the Marniers offering him arbitration.
Adrian Beltre is only ~3 points away from Type A status.  This is surprising given his off year and DL time, but if he comes back strong there is a chance that [...]

Connect the Dots?

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Ian Snell said in his most recent radio interview that the Mariners are having him throw a bullpen tomorrow down in Texas.  Throwing tomorrow would line him up for a Sunday start.
Jarrod Washburn is currently scheduled to start on Sunday.

Olson Takes on the Rangers

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Among Seattle Mariners pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched, Garrett Olson has the second highest FB% at 49.8 and second highest HR/FB at 14.3. He’s been a disaster as a starter, especially lately.
So why is he scheduled to start today’s game against the Texas Rangers, an offense that is second by .001 in ISO [...]

Zduriencik’s Player

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

We’re starting to get a better idea of what kind of players GM Jack Zduriencik likes to target.

Polished ballplayers are better than raw, high upside athletes.
Makeup issues aren’t a deal breaker.
In a pinch, focus on defense.
Work the counts and draw walks.
If the potential is there, our staff can bring it out.
If a reliever has velocity, [...]

Mariners Acquire Manuel for Balentien

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The Seattle Mariners have traded DFA’d OF Wladimir Balentien to the Cincinnatti Reds for RHP Robert Manuel.
More in a bit.
Add on 1: Manuel is a 25 year old reliever who just made his MLB debut a few games back.  Last season he threw 86.2 innings in relief between High-A, AA and AAA, allowing 54 H, [...]
