Cuts, Round Three

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

The Seattle Mariners made six more cuts today, wiping out all of the rest of the 40-man newbies.  Dustin Ackley, Dan Cortes, Edward Paredes, Anthony Varvaro and Ricky Orta were all optioned to AA West Tenn, while Ezequiel Carrera was optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Ackley and Carrera didn’t have any chance at making the team, so [...]

Cuts, Round Two

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Four more Spring Training cuts rolled in today, and these four were even less surprising than some of the first batch.
First basemen Tommy Everidge and Brad Nelson along with outfielders Greg Halman and Mike Wilson have been reassigned to minor league camp.

Cuts, Round One

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Seven non-roster invites and one 40-man player have been voted off the island. Catchers Steve Baron and Luis Oliveros, lefty starters Mauricio Robles, Chris Seddon, Ryan Feierabend and Nick Hill and right handed relievers Joshua Fields and Steven Shell are the first cuts of the spring for our Seattle Mariners.

M’s sign Wes Littleton

Monday, March 1st, 2010

The Mariners have signed 27 year old side-armer Wes Littleton to a minor league deal. In 2006, Littleton fluked his way into a 1.73 ERA in 36.1 major league innings with just 17 K thanks to a .197 BABIP. Since then, Littleton has bounced around the minors and majors, getting smacked around pretty good last [...]

Sweeney Re-Signs

Friday, February 12th, 2010

The Seattle Mariners have re-signed DH/1B Mike Sweeney to a minor league deal and invited him to Spring Training.  The official press release says he’ll be “competing for a spot,” but you can bet that this move is Seattle throwing Sweeney a bone and letting him audition for other teams, as Larry LaRue reported recently.
Sweeney [...]

Mariners Sign Jesus Colome to a minor league contract
Veteran reliever who throws the heat but has little control and doesn’t have a history of missing bats.  He could surprise and make the big club, but I don’t like his chances much considering some of the other arms competing for those final bullpen spots.  He’s serviceable [...]

Bedard Signing Official

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Erik Bedard has “passed” his physical and agreed to a deal with the Seattle Mariners that guarantees him $1.5M with escalators that could take the deal up to $8.5M.  There is also a mutual option for 2011 at $8.5M, that could rise depending on 2010 performance.  Yusmeiro Petit, a November waiver claim, has been designated [...]

Felix El Rey – The Money

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

More on the Felix Hernandez extension.  A couple of hours ago Jon Heyman tweeted the contract details:
$3.5M signing bonus
2010: $6.5M
2011: $10M
2012: $18.5M
2013: $19.5M
2014: $20M
Adding up to $78M, the previously reported figure. Cot’s Baseball Contracts has the escalators being $1M for Cy Young, $500K for 2nd place and $250K for 3rd place.  I must have missed [...]

Felix El Rey – Contract Length

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I was planning on waiting until the dust settles to write up my thoughts on the Felix Hernandez extension, but in this great blogosphere the longer I wait the less there will be to write, so instead of just waiting for all the details I’ll just talk about individual aspects of the deal as they [...]
